2nd pair of these over a 3-4 year period. First pair got chewed up a bit by my hot muffler (mostly over the knee, where I tend to bump the muffler if I'm not careful). The winter overpants were more resistant to melting - am hoping that this pair is better in that regard now. I wear these in the summer as they allow good airflow through the fabric, while providing protection for my body (particularly knees)and clothes. Not quite as much airflow as mesh, but there is also more protection and these are more comfortable to wear. Have not worn these in the rain so I don't know about water protection, but I suspect that they will not provide that type of protection. I wear them over dress slacks when I commute to work (daily in the SF Bay Area) to keep clothes clean and wrinkle free. These fit a little tighter than the warmer winter over-pants
