If pants have any synthetic fiber, the OEM hot pipes will ruin the pants if a cloth brushes up against the pipes.
The shields will offer good protection. I'm amazed that the Cobra pipes do not have better built-in thermal (hot!!!) shielding in the area where the leg easily touches the pipes. The full-length shield that is there is strictly to cosmetically cover the actual Cobra pipe so discoloration doesn't show. This cosmetic shield offers very little in thermal protection.
These attachable shield help quite a bit, but where the clips are tack-welded on them, on the other side where the chrome dressing is, you'll see a blemish. This mars an otherwise good product.
